Project Spotlight: Theater Transformation

A few weeks ago a client in the Philadelphia area approached us to help them visualize their theater transformation plans for an upcoming design competition. Their goal was to show what the new County Theater would look like in the current neighborhood. We had done this a few times before using images from Google Maps, but for this project, we wanted to make sure the setting was as current as possible.

The initial phases of creating this rendering were drastically different from most of our other projects, as this one started with one of our Digital Artists traveling to the scene and taking two important photographs. The first photograph was the “Before” image you see above. This was the image that we would fit our final rendered building into. The second photograph was a unique one in which our Digital Artist took a picture of a yard globe. The yard globe is essentially a chrome ball that creates a curved reflection of the surrounding environment. This image was used as a World Background (an image that acts a lighting and shading instrument in the rendering software) to ensure the lighting and shading on our rendered building matched that of the “Before” photograph.

Once we had captured those two important images, our rendering team could get to work on creating the new building and fitting it into the surrounding environment. To create the desired outcome, our team had to clean up the “Before” image by removing the silver Subaru that would have blocked the new building and rebuilding that part of the sidewalk and street. After removing and repairing that area, the final rendering of the building could be placed into the photograph. Then the team touched up the sky and added some community movie-goers, creating the perfect Before & After of the theater transformation.
